Pancakes!

5th March 2025K Holtham

Class 6 have been learning all about Shrove Tuesday. We know that Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent begins. Lent is the period leading up to Easter, when people often give up something.

In the past, people would give up certain foods like eggs during Lent, so to use them up, they would mix them with other rich foods such as milk, flour and butter to make pancakes.

The children all enjoyed eating some delicious pancakes with various toppings. Yum!

Poetry

19th February 2025K Holtham

Class 6 have been reading and reciting a range of poems this week. They focused on the poem ‘Who Am I?’ and used a planning sheet to plan their own personal versions of the poem. The children wrote about their hobbies, things they like to eat and drink, likes, dislikes, things they are good at, things they sometimes need help with, and what they want to be when they grow up, using the same structure as the original poem.

The children then took turns to perform their poems to the rest of the class. They did a great job! ⭐️

Safer Internet Day

11th February 2025K Holtham

Today is Safer Internet Day. The children have learnt all about the SMART rules:

S – Stay safe. Never share your personal information online.
M – Meeting up. Never agree to meet up with someone you have just met online as it can be very dangerous.
A – Accepting files. Don’t accept emails, files, pictures or messages from people you don’t know.
R – Reliable. Check information before you believe it. Is the person or website telling the truth?
T – Tell a trusted adult if someone or something makes you feel worried or uncomfortable.

The children know that the best thing to do if they are unsure of something online is to tell a trusted adult and ask for help. The children learnt the SMART song to help them remember what to do. They then created some e-safety posters and Safer Internet Day activity mats.

Speak Out, Stay Safe!

20th January 2025K Holtham

Class 6 had a visitor named Cheryl from the NSPCC who told us all about the Speak Out, Stay Safe campaign and showed us ‘Buddy’ the mascot. Cheryl talked about the ways a child can be hurt by others, that it is never a child’s fault if they are hurt, and that all children have the right to be kept safe and know how to get help. The children listened beautifully during carpet time then made some Buddy puppets and bookmarks to take home.

The children could all identify safe adults that they would tell if they were being hurt or made to feel upset or worried by someone. They said they would tell a parent, older siblings who could help, a grandparent or another trusted family member, Miss Holtham, Miss Nisbet or Mrs Askwith. The children also learnt about the Childline website and phone number. Well done, Class 6!

Class 6

Super Science

15th January 2025K Holtham

Class 6 have been learning all about a scientist from the past called Louis Pasteur. He carried out experiments to prove that germs spread from person to person through the air and through touch. His aim was to minimise the spread of germs and reduce the transmission of diseases.

The children carried out an experiment where one person from each group put their hand in glitter then shook hands with other children in their group. The children noticed that the glitter spread easily from person to person. The only way we could get the glitter off our hands was to wash them with soap and water. This highlighted the importance of washing our hands thoroughly to reduce the spread of germs.

Class 6

Feeling Proud

8th January 2025K Holtham

Our PSHE topic this half term is ‘Dreams and Goals’. This week, we talked about successes we have achieved that have made us feel proud. The children made lots of lovely suggestions for things that have made them feel proud; such as receiving Golden Awards or prizes for good work, winning trophies for things like football and dancing, or getting better at something they have been practising.

Class 6

18th December 2024K Holtham
