Class 5

Class 5 were so lucky to recieve a visit from Lydia, who works at the Recycling Centre. She talked to us about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling plastic so it does not end up in the ocean, harming the sea creatures. We learned that plastic can take beteeen 20 to 500 years to decompose, but in reality they never really disappear. They break down into tiny harmful fragments called microplastic. We were shocked and will make it our mission to keep our plastic use to a minimum.

Human’s created the problem. They can fix it too.

This week in Art, Class 5 have been creating some beautiful sea creatures. They used oil pastels to create creamy textures, rich colours and gorgeous blends. Take a look at their masterpieces 🐠

In class 5, children made a sea creature with moving parts to help them understand how a pivot works. They used simple materials such as card and split pins to make parts of their creature move. As they build and test their models, children explored how a pivot allows one part to turn while staying attached in one place.

This morning, Year 2 had a visit from Rachel, who works for Science Buddies. We learned about renewable and non renewable energy. After that, Rachel taught us lots about wind farms, and how these generate electricity, which is renewable and sustainable. 

Their task was to create blades for a turbine and test they spin around using a fan. If they accomplished this, they had to change the blades to make them spin faster and slower. What a challenge! 

We most definitely have some future engineers in Class 5

Children in Class 5 have been enjoying some of our new class toys while others do some colour mixing, after learning all about primary and secondary colours, before moving on to tones and tints. We are super excited to use our skills to create a seaside silhouette – pictures to follow 🌊

This week in English, we followed a set of instructions and made a fruit cocktail. We talked about these instructions having bossy verbs and adverbs (cut, chop, slice..  carefully, slowly) and time connectives (first, next, then, finally). 

Once we finished, we enjoyed eating the fruit. It tasted SO good.

We then wrote the instructions up, making sure they included all of the features needed ✍️

Today in DT, the children in Class 5 explored the art of weaving. We learned about how people used weaving in the olden days to make everyday items like clothing and baskets, and discussed the importance of this skill in the past. The children then had a go at replicating this technique themselves, carefully weaving materials over and under to create their own patterns. They showed great focus and creativity while developing their fine motor skills.

Class 5 made the most of this gorgeous warm weather we have been having and spend some time outside on the bikes and scooters. The children had so much fun exploring this new equipment and can’t wait until next time ☺️.

This week in Class 5 has been a celebration of Chinese New Year. We talked about how the zodiac animals got their names and that this year, it’s the year of the horse! After watching some videos on how Chinese New Year is traditionally celebrated, we decided to try and delicious food and give the classroom a spring clean to signifying a fresh start. We had lots of fun.
