This week was Class 1’s last assembly in Reception, we all did an amazing job retelling the the story – Zog and the Flying Doctors! We all used big loud voices and loved acting out how the characters were feeling!

This week in Maths we have continued looking at our number bonds to 5 and 10! We did an amazing job starting with our number bonds to 5.
1 + 4 = 5 – Miya
2+3=5 – Maxwell
4+1=5 – Eleanor
3+2=5 – Charlie
After cementing our knowledge of our number bonds to 5 we then started looking again at our number bonds to 10. We have done this in a variety of ways including using numicon and tens frames with 2 different coloured counters.
1+9=10 – Piper
8+2=10 – Leo
3+7=10 – Layton
4+6=10 – Aluna-Rae
After practising our number bonds to 10 we then wrote the number sentence in our books, we did so well!
This week we enjoyed our trip to Hardwick Park, we took part in so many activities throughout the day!
Our first activity involved us being a pirate, there were so many jobs pirates needed to do on their ships! We started by building our own ship using sticks, cones and leaves we could find int he woods, we then brought them altogether to create a shape of a pirate ship! After that we tried some pirate jobs ourselves;
After working hard at being pirates for the morning we then met some hungry dragons! We know that dragons need to eat lots of food however, we were given a large range of foods to choose from for each. Together we decided that we should group the food into healthy and unhealthy foods, ensuring that the dragons got all of the healthy food to keep them big and strong.
As a final task we talked about taking care of our environment and set about cleaning up the local areas to ensure the wildlife can be kept safe and protected.
This week we took part in our very own sports day! We loved being able to take part in lots of different types of races, such as;
⚽️ Egg and spoon
⚽️ Sack race
⚽️ Running race
We enjoyed cheering our friends on because we all wanted to do our best. We also showed our resilience as we never gave up even if we found a race tricky we kept trying and never gave up!
This week in PE we practised using our coordination skills as we needed to cross the river on a hoop boat!
We worked in pairs to try and move our hoops along the river to get to the other side before a shark could catch us! We needed to move the hoop before we could step in but also couldn’t move the hoop we stood in before we were out! To make it harder we then had to transport our own treasure with us!
This week in maths we have been practising using Numberlines in order to solve addition and subtraction number sentences.
We started by reading and identifying number sentences, we needed to know if we were adding or taking away and this impacted how we moved on our numberline. We know that if we are adding a number will be greater and will move forward on the numberline, if we are taking away we know that the number will be less and will make us move backwards on the numberline.
This week Class 1 received a letter from a pirate complaining about how his captain continued to tell him that he needed to go to bed early, the pirate didn’t like this and asked us to write a letter to his captain explaining that they did not need to go to bed so early!
We had lots of discussions about why they need to go to bed when they are told;
Sleep makes you healthy – Layton
You will need more energy to sail the boat – Kezia
We also discussed why the pirates needed to stay up later;
They need to swab the deck – Gray
The rats need chasing – Miya
We all worked very hard to write a letter to the pirates arguing about whether they should go to bed earlier or later.
Thank you so much to everyone who attended our reading afternoon to share a lovely book with your child and spend some quality time together
This week we have been practising our measuring skills, we have been measuring both the weight and length of different objects in our classroom.
We started by measuring the weight of objects found in our classroom, we needed to see which object was heavier or lighter, we know if the object is heavier it would drop down on the scales, if the object was lighter it would rise.
After feeling confident working out which items were heavier or lighter we then moved onto cube amounts.
12 is lighter than 10 because 12 is greater than 10 – Kezia
15 is heavier than 14 because 14 is less than 15 – Gray
After we were confident with our weight measuring skills we began to measure the length of our shoes. We know that length is the distance measured between 2 points. We did well to ensure we measured properly from the end of a shoe to the other without going over or under otherwise the measurement would not be accurate.
This week Class 1 have been working hard on developing their balls skills during PE. We started developing our skills by holding a ball steady whilst moving around, we then tried moving on and patting a ball while remaining still to then patting a ball whilst moving. We then did some controlled rolling to reach a desired target.
We then practised controlled rolling of a ball around our bodies, we worked very hard to ensure that we could move the ball carefully around our bodies without dropping it.
We have done well to develop our ball skills to ensure we can move balls without losing control.
