Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) and Relationship and Health Education (RHE) is embedded in school life and throughout the teaching and learning at Monkton Infants School.
It is our intent that pupils are provided with opportunities and experiences which reflect the increasing independence and social awareness of learners as they move through the school. During PSHE lessons, children learn skills to develop effective relationships, assume greater responsibility and keep themselves safe. Our curriculum is intended to equip pupils with the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. Children develop the attributes required to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives as individuals and as members of society.
After discussions with our children and School Council members, it became apparent that although the children were fully aware of the PSHE subject matter, the title of PSHE / RHE had very little meaning to our children. Therefore, we decided to give the children the opportunity to rename the subject. The School Council members worked together to come up with alternative names for PSHE and devised a questionnaire for each class with the aim of gaining the children’s views, allowing them to be fully involved into the re-branding of PSHE in our school. The children voted for their favourite name and as a result, PSHE will now be known as Me, You and the World.
Well done to all of the children at Monkton Infants School! We feel incredibly proud that you have all worked together to make such a significant change to our curriculum.
Class 6 are reading a fantasy story called Lily, Windy and the Witch during story time each day. The children have written some fantastic character descriptions of Windy – the magical fairy from the story.
In computing we have been learning all about coding and programming. We have used Sphero and Code-a-pillar in class, giving the robot instructions in sequences to direct them from a start position to the finish position.
In our Geography lessons we have been learning about our local and the famous landmarks. We have been inspired by these for our art and design lessons. We have researched more information about the famous Marsden Rock in South Shields and also other landmarks in the North East like the Angel of the North. Look at the amazing information and the sketches of our Town Hall.

Year 2 are learning all about Judaism in RE this term. The children enjoyed handling a range of Jewish artefacts; including a Torah, tallit, kippah, Hanukkah menorah and the Star of David symbol. The children then wrote sentences describing each artefact and what it is used for.
The children in Class 6 were egg-static to create their Easter eggs for our boiled egg competition!
We think you will agree that their designs are egg-cellent!
Year 2 had a visit from Katie at Science Buddies who told us all about the new wind farm that is being built at Dogger Bank in the North Sea. It will be the world’s largest wind farm. Each phase of the built will bring 1.2 gigawatts of energy – that’s enough to light up to 10 million light bulbs!
The children had so much fun working in teams to create their own wind turbines just like the ones being built at Dogger Bank. They then tested out their wind turbines to see if they would work and edited their designs to make them work more effectively.
The children visited Durham Cathedral this week. They enjoyed walking around looking at all of different features of the Cathedral including the font, lectern, pulpit, stained glass windows and the high altar. They listened intently to Joseph and Kim, our tour guides, who told us all about the history of St Cuthbert and St Bede who are both buried at the Cathedral.
The children then took part in a workshop called ‘Expression of Beliefs’ where they got to hold and discuss a range of special artefacts from the Cathedral including candles, Bibles, communion bread, a chalice and a cross. The children said that Durham Cathedral was a very beautiful and interesting place.
Back at school the children wrote some fantastic recounts of the trip, including lots of lovely facts about the Cathedral.
Class 6 were absolutely fantastic in the South Tyneside Music Festival. They sang songs from The Greatest Showman and took part in the performance of Humpty Dumpty. We are very proud of all of the children who took part.
