Who has laid an egg?

By Sophie Bruce7th February 2024

This week Class 1 were surprised to find a real egg in our classroom, nobody could understand where it had come from and why the nest had been built in lour classroom.  Attached to the egg was a special set of clues we all needed to read to try and discover what animal was inside of the egg.

I think it’s a dinosaur! – Joshua

It’s a T-Rex – AJ

I think it’s a brontosaurus – Bodhi

We read the clues carefully, when we read that it had flat teeth we all knew that this meant the dinosaur was a herbivore, which is a dinosaur that eats plants.  We then read about how it had horns, we then had a long think about the dinosaurs we know of which have horns and are herbivores.

Using our detective skills we read a Top Dinosaur book to see if it was one of the dinosaurs inside, sadly, we couldn’t find a dinosaur in the book which was being described.  So we then began to think about what other dinosaurs we knew, together we decided to research a triceratops.  After searching for the triceratops on the computer we found that this dinosaur had horns, a frill and was a herbivore!  We all then learned some super facts about a triceratops and wrote them in our books.

We also had some broken eggs in our classroom, these eggs had numbers and numicon written on them, our job was to try and put the pieces of egg back together by matching the right number to the correct numicon! We all did a fantastic job!

Dinosaurs invade Class 1!

By Sophie Bruce1st February 2024

On Tuesday morning we were all shocked to enter our classroom and see that it had been destroyed! We could not believe that someone would have been so cheeky as to make our classroom such a big mess! After having a discussion in our class we decided it might not have been a person at all, we all shared our ideas of who we thought it might be!

I think it was a  Rhino – Jersey

It was a Dinosaur! – Leo

We were surprised when a video of our classroom was found and it turned out to be a DINOSAUR that had invaded our classroom and made a huge mess!

We then created a spider diagram about what we wanted to find out about our dinosaur such as;

What type of dinosaur was it?

What did it eat?

How long ago did it live?

We have been working very hard to learn about different dinosaurs and what makes each dinosaur different.  We know that some dinosaurs are carnivores which means that they eat meat and we know that some dinosaurs are herbivores which means that eat lots of grass, leaves and trees.

A carnivore has sharp teeth! – Nova

Herbivores eat plants on the trees – Bodhi

We have had such a fantastic week learning about lots of different dinosaurs and can’t wait to see what happens next!

Dinosaurs love underpants?

By Sophie Bruce25th January 2024

Class 1 received another surprise this week! We were all so shocked to enter our classroom to find a GIANT PAIR OF UNDERPANTS hanging from one of our washing lines.  We looked and studied the pants to try and figure out who the underpants belonged to, we knew it had to be someone bigger than us!

I think they belong to a T-Rex – Riley

They are underpants – AJ

It must be someone very big! – Jersey

We soon discovered they belonged to a DINOSAUR! We discovered that the underpants belonged to a dinosaur as we read a new story “Dinosaurs love underpants”. It was such a funny story!

After discovering who the underpants belonged to we then set on our task of writing a sentence about the underpants using an adjective.

Doubling in Class 1!

By Sophie Bruce18th January 2024

Class 1 have been working hard during Maths this week as we have tackled a new aspect of doubling.  We have been talking about what doubling is and how we answer questions such as double 2.

Doubling is adding the same number 2 times – Vinnie

2 + 2 = 4 – Jersey

Double 3 is 6 – Timothy

We used lots of different ways to help us to double numbers this week.  In our books we doubled using ladybirds, we know that ladybird have the same amount of spots on each wing so we can use these to double numbers.

I put 3 on this side and 3 on this side. Double 3 is 6 – Joey

We have also been using numicon to help us to double, we used the number sentences given to us to then make using the numicon, this helped us to work out the answers.

We have all done an amazing job at learning how to double!

Dinosaurs visit Class 1!

By Sophie Bruce11th January 2024

This week has been very exciting, we started by having a special delivery come into our classroom! We were all so excited to see what could possibly be inside of the giant box!

When Class 1 took a closer look at the box we noticed that there were lots of holes and a large sheet of instructions attached.  We read the instructions with Mrs Bruce, we were told to;

  • Do not feed me
  • Do not cover my air holes
  • Do not touch my box
  • Do not make loud noises

After reading these instructions we all decided that there must be something alive inside of the box!  We all worked together to come up with some ideas about what could be inside of the box.

I think there’s a slimy snake – Timothy

I think it’s a cute tarantula – Bodhi

I think it’s a green crocodile – Nova

When we came in the next morning we all saw that it was in fact……….A REAL DINOSAUR!

We can’t wait to see what we will be doing with the dinosaur over the next few weeks!

It’s Christmas!

By Sophie Bruce20th December 2023

It has been a very exciting week in Class 1 as we have been preparing for Christmas!

All of our areas have been themed around Christmas which we have all thoroughly enjoyed!  In our Maths area we have been trying to help Santa by making number elves, we needed to work out what each of the elves numbers were and come up with the right way to make each number.

5 and 5 makes 10 – Timothy

3 add 2 equals 5 – Leo

4 add 1 equals 5 – Nova

We have also been ordering stockings in our Maths area, first we had to cut out the numbered stockings and then stick them in the right order from 1 up to 10!

I can count up to 10, I know that 1 comes first – Jersey

We have been very crafty in our classroom this week as we made lots of different Christmas art pieces.  We started by making our own reindeer Christmas cards, we did this by using our fingers to print a reindeer head and then added a nose and antlers when they had dried, we wrote our inserts to our families.

We have also made some lovely reindeer Christmas ornaments for our trees at home, we did this by painting 3 lolly sticks and then sticking them together adding some eyes and a bright red pompom nose!

Look I made a triangle for his head! – Joey

It’s beginning to look like Christmas…..

By Sophie Bruce15th December 2023

Class 1 have thoroughly enjoyed a wide range of Christmas based activities in class.  We have been reading a lovely Christmas story about a letter to Santa, we were learning about how kind it can be to wish for someone else to receive a wish and who we may send a wish to.

In our Maths area we have been counting up the spots on the baubles and then matching it to the correct number.

I can see 10 spots, there is number 10 – Joey

We have also been cutting out simple shapes to recreate different Christmas pictures such as; angels, trees, crackers and presents.

In our writing area we have had a variety of Christmas cards, some of the cards we have been colouring in first and then writing inside to give to our friends.  We have also had Christmas cards ready for us to write in to send to our friends and family.

I am writing a card to my mammy – Maya

In our finger gym we have been working hard to pick up small sequin pieces to follow a pattern on a bauble.

Our Sporty Week in Class 1

By Sophie Bruce5th December 2023

This week in Class 1 we were very lucky to take part in Hoop Starz!

We were learning how to hoola hoop correctly, we all learnt so much within a short space of time! We all now know the correct methods to hoola hoop effectively and for a long period of time.

We have to have one foot forwards – Nova

We have to move our tummies backwards and forwards to make the hoop move – Timothy

After practising how to hoola hoop we then hoola hooped to some music, we all did such a fantastic job!

We were lucky enough to then build our own Hoola Homes, to do this week needed six hoops, one for the floor, two for the side of the home, one to make a front door and another one for the back door, to complete the Hoola Home we then added the final hoop on top to make a roof.

Our challenge after building the Hoola Home was to see if we could all fit into our homes without knocking them over……WE DID IT!

We all had such a fantastic time and can’t wait to share our skills at home!

Shape Sorting!

By Sophie Bruce30th November 2023

This week in Class 1 we have been working hard in Maths.  We have been counting up to 9 this week and learning all about the number 9, we know lots of different ways to make 9 such as;

5 + 4 = 9 – Nova

6 + 3 = 9 – Leo

8 + 1 = 9 – Jersey

7 + 2 = 9 – Timothy

To ensure that we are able to continue learning about number in the classroom we have also been recalling shapes and how many sides each shape has, we then had the task of sorting some shapes into the correct place.

A square has 4 sides – Maya

A rectangle has 2 short and 2 long – Bodhi

Triangle has 3 sides – Joey

Jack Frost in Class 1!

By Sophie Bruce23rd November 2023

This week we have been reading the story Here Comes Jack Frost!  We have enjoyed talking about the weather when reading this story as we noticed that it was all about cold weather.  We know that Jack Frost comes when it is becoming Winter and that means that it is getting colder and we may even see snow and ice!

Jack Frost wrote us a letter telling us that when he had visited our school he had lost his frozen hands!  We knew we had to help Jack Frost find them before they melted!  We checked our outdoor area for his hands…….thank goodness we found them before they had melted!

We all agreed that the best place to put Jack Frost’s hands was in the freezer to keep them nice and cold.  After saving his hands we wrote a letter back to Jack Frost letting him know that we had found his hands and had put them in the freezer for him to collect.

Amazing work in Class 1!
