Keeping healthy

17th October 2024Sophie Bruce

This week Class 1 we’re visited by our local school nurses. They came in to talk to us about how to keep ourselves clean and healthy. We discussed washing our hands, we know we need to wash our hands throughout the day to prevent germs from spreading to our friends and families.
To test how germs spread we passed a glittery ball and then checked our hands to see what germs had been left on our hands, we were shocked! To help us learn how to wash our hands properly the nurses sang a song for us to use when washing our hands to make sure we clean all parts of our hands.

We wash our hands after the toilet – Eden

Wash hands before dinner – Thomas

We the also learned about the importance of looking after our teeth, this doesn’t just include brushing them but watching how many sugary things we eat during the day.

Chocolate only one or two a week – Gray

Brush your teeth two times a day – Kezia

We all learned so much about looking after ourselves and can’t wait to show everyone how good we are at washing our hands and brushing our teeth!

Our Autumn Assembly

11th October 2024Sophie Bruce

This week was Class 1’s first assembly in Reception!

We all did such an amazing job sharing all of the fun facts we have learned about the Autumn season.

In Autumn the leaves change to brown, red, orange or yellow – Layton

It gets colder in Autumn! – Eden

Animals get food to hide for Winter – Aria

We all used our big voices to ensure our grown ups could hear us when we were speaking.

Class 1

When I was a baby

4th October 2024Sophie Bruce

This week we have started learning about how we have changed as we have grown up. We know that when we were babies we couldn’t do lots for ourselves but now that we are bigger we can do more.

When I was a baby mammy had to feed me milk – Lucas

I had to crawl because I couldn’t walk – Iiona

Babies need people to look after them – Miya

We read a lovely story together as a class called I am big, it showed us the story of a young boy who wanted to grow bigger so that he could do the same activities his bigger brother was doing.

We talked about how we have already grown up from being a baby because we are now children.

I can eat my food all by myself – Henry
I can put my clothes on by myself – Aria

We have also enjoyed looking at our old baby photos and guessing who they were, we could see how much we have changed and grown since we were babies.

Supertato to the Rescue!

26th September 2024Sophie Bruce

This week Class 1 have been reading Supertato, a story about a super hero vegetable! We all loved the story and made our own story map to help us retell the story.

We have been able to sort some evil peas into the correct amounts on different plates. We had to do this very carefully as if we squeezed the tweezers too hard we would squash the peas and they wouldn’t be counted on our plates.

This is 7 so I need 7 peas – Piper

I put 5 peas on the plate! – Gray

We have also been designing our own super hero vegetables and labelling them using the initial sounds we can here! We have had some amazing heroes designed!

Class 1

Music

19th September 2024Sophie Bruce

Class 1 have enjoyed taking part in our first music lesson this week. We always start our lessons by listening to a song we may or may not know. We then had a discussion about whether we liked the music and why;

Layton – I liked the instruments

Iiona – I liked the singing because it was loud

Aria – I didn’t like the singing because it sounded silly

We then needed to use our listening ears carefully to try and hear the beat of a song, we then tried to follow the best by patting our knees at the right time. To end our music lesson we then practised singing pat-a-cake, we used actions to help us remember the words.

Class 1

Our first PE lesson

10th September 2024Sophie Bruce

This week in Class 1 we have started taking part in our PE lessons, we have thoroughly enjoyed being able to get active during our school day!

This week we have been working on how we are able to move our bodies in different ways whilst also making a circle. We needed to think carefully when moving around the hall to ensure we didn’t bump into anyone or loose our balance.

We practised moving around on our tippy toes, using long strides, crawling on all fours and crawling along on our tummy’s!

Super work!

The Circus!

By Sophie Bruce7th March 2024

We have had a very exciting week in Class 1 as we had our themed week of Circus! We were very lucky to have a real circus performer come into our school and teach us some tricks using the equipment he brought.

We were able to try juggling with bean bags, netting, clubs and rings, we all started by trying to catch the netting one at a time and giving ourselves more the better we got.  if we felt confident we could move onto using the beanbags to try juggling, again we started by throwing one ball at a time and catching it with one hand and then moving onto more balls the more confident we felt.

Look! I can throw two nets and catch them! – Leo

I can throw a ball and catch it in my hand – Pud

We also had a try of spinning some plates on a stick, we had to work very hard to first balance the plates and then we used our stronger hand to try and spin the plates.  First we started with one plate and if we wanted to we could try with more than one!

I have 4 plates spinning – Ollie

I have a plate on this hand and another here – Maya

This week was also World Book Day and we all looked amazing for our theme surrounding The Circus! We all enjoyed reading our story Ninja Nan, the story told us about a Nan who ran away to join the circus! We then all wrote our own letters to our families telling them that we were running away to the circus to become jugglers or acrobats.

We have all had an amazing week celebrating World Book Day and The Circus!

Caterpillars!

By Sophie Bruce1st March 2024

It has been another very exciting week in Class 1 as we have been learning about the Life cycle of a Butterfly.  We started by reading a new story called “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”, after reading this we then created our own story map to retell the story as a class.

We then completed some activities in our class all about The Very Hungry Caterpillar, in our Maths area we completed a task where we needed to add the correct amount of body segments to the caterpillars head.  We did this by recognising the number above its head and then used our finger dipped in paint to count out the right amount of segments.

In our reading area we used story spoons to order the story events, this also helped us to verbally retell the story to our friends.

We were also busy in our Art area where we recreated the hungry caterpillar using 3D shapes and printing them onto large pieces of paper in the shape of the caterpillar.

We have also been very lucky to have a special delivery of some real caterpillars! We are very excited to watch the caterpillars grown and turn into beautiful butterflies!

Fantastic Maths!

By Sophie Bruce14th February 2024

Class 1 have been working hard during Maths, we have been learning about addition and subtraction!

We started by completing some practical activities to add different items together, we started by rolling a dice and subitising the amount of dots on top, we then wrote this number for the start of our number sentence and then adding the addition symbol.  We then rolled a second dice, subitised the number and wrote this number next in our number sentence, we then had a number sentence such as 4 + 3 =__. We then added these numbers together and then wrote this at the end of the number sentence.

Following on from this we then started subtracting in Maths.

When we take away the number gets smaller – Timothy

We practised subtraction physically to begin with, we did this by putting beanbags out and counting the amount, we then verbalised subtracting 2.

Take 2 out to subtract 2 – Nova

We then started to write this in a number sentence, we identified that the larger number went first and we then used the subtraction symbol before putting the take away amount, we then worked out the answer by counting out how many beanbags we had left.
