Our ‘Check In’ Fuzzle Wall!

Our ‘check in’ wall up and running!

In class, we use different zones to represent and show how we are feeling. These are categorised by four colours:

💚 Green: happy, positive, proud, calm, focused
💙 Blue: sad, tired, withdrawn, tearful
💛 Yellow: excited, nervous, frustrated, annoyed
❤️ Red: mad, furious, terrified, yelling

These zones support children in learning the vocabulary to better understand and reflect on their mood throughout the day. It also aids as a visual reminder for us as teachers, so we can see who might need some extra care and attention in that moment.

The class are now able to move their own face to the different zones throughout the day. We also use our mental health mascot ‘Fuzzle’ to support us with our mood regulation and promote discussion.

Try, Try and Try Again!

This week, Class 6 have been practising for their class assembly which took place on Friday – all about what we call having a ‘Growth Mindset’! This is when you keep trying despite something being tricky. We made our own posters with motivational sayings to inspire us to never give up. I was super proud of my class for putting on an excellent assembly, having not performed one for around 2 whole years! It was lovely to have the grown-ups back into school to watch us.

Settling into Year 2

We have had a fabulous few days in Year 2. As an ice-breaker, we played a game of ‘Would you rather’ – we found this utterly hilarious! We also thoroughly enjoyed playing bingo by picking our own numbers up to 20. If we won, we got a dip in the new Class 6 prize box which was very exciting. Here are some photos…

Rainbow Flag Award – Introduction

At Monkton Infants we have been given the amazing opportunity to be involved in the Rainbow Flag Award. We already do lots of work in the school around how we are different – from hair colour and eye colour to height, build and race. Our children really are fantastic at accepting each other for their unique qualities.

To make our school even more inclusive, we now have a wealth of amazing books to make children aware of more differences we have out there in the real world which will be shared in classes in KS1. From diverse families (e.g. same gender parents) to knowing it’s absolutely ok to break all gender stereotypes. Whether you love pink, blue, glitter, cars, tiaras or footballs… We will all be accepted and loved just for being us!

We are hoping this early approach will prevent homophobic and transphobic behaviour later in life, as often it is the initial shock and misunderstanding which can be the root cause.

Every Wednesday up until half term, Class 3 will be making music using the app ‘GarageBand’. Each week we will building upon our own song – this week we used the keyboard and recorded a tune! Next week we will be using a different instrument. The class had a ball!

Fab Friends!

This week, Class 3 celebrated Anti-Bullying week. We thought about the things we could do during the week to be an even better friend to everybody in the class. Later in the week, we thought of qualities we’d love most in a friend. We designed our own friend and chose our favourite qualities for them to have!

New Maths Symbols!

This week, the class were introduced to the inequality symbols. These represent greater than, less than and equal to. We compared groups of objects by counting accurately before moving onto comparing digits. Class 3 did a marvellous job, getting to grips with something that is considered very tricky!

Marvellous Money!

This week, we have been learning all about money! The class were introduced to all of our coins and we ordered them from the lowest to highest value. We noticed which coins were bronze, which ones were silver and which ones were gold. We noticed that the £2 coin was both silver and gold! We have even been trying hard to add different coins together. Finally, we moved onto identifying our notes! We looked at the £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes. We looked at how they’ve changed recently, too!
