In Science, we have been looking at the five senses. We talked about what they were, how we use them and which parts of the body are needed for each one. We used our senses to explore the season of Spring, describing what we could see, hear, taste, smell and feel. We then carried out an experiment, using our senses to describe 6 different mystery items, including:
Chocolate
☕️ Coffee beans
Washing up liquid
Yoghurt
Water
Lemon juice
We described their smell, what they looked like and how they felt before guessing what we thought it might be. Of course we identified the chocolate straight away! But some others like the coffee had us stumped!
This afternoon, we’ve had Natalie from the Healthy Minds Team in to teach Year 1 how to change their negative red thoughts, into positive green ones! ☺️
We found out about a boy called Adam today who had recently moved to a new school. He had lots of unhelpful thoughts such as ‘Why did things have to change?’ and ‘I really miss my old friends and teacher’. We helped him feel better by changing his thoughts, such as ‘My teacher will look after me!’ and ‘I’ll make new friends and I can still see my old ones on play dates!”.
We also learnt a new breathing technique – hot chocolate breathing!
This year our theme for World Book Day was ‘careers’. We spent lots of time this week looking at different jobs we could do – some we didn’t even know existed! We looked at what skills we need for different jobs and talked about the importance of choosing a job which involves something we are interested in. On Thursday, we came to school dressed as what we would like to be when we grow up. We had some wonderful costumes including;
Paleontologist
✂️ Hairdresser
Police officer
Fireman
Cheerleader
Science teacher
and so much more!

This week we were very lucky to have Natalie visit us form Healthy Minds to talk to us about our feelings.
We discussed the different emotions we can have an how it is normal for us to feel these different ways, we can feel; happy, sad, angry, anxious, bored, embarrassed.
We discussed who might help when we are feeling sad or angry.
I talk to mammy when I’m sad – Henry
I am feeling sad and then mammy and daddy give me a hug – Maxwell
We also discussed what makes us feel happy;
Singing makes me happy – Kezia
Playing with my toys – Iiona
Spending time with my family – Aria
Talking kindly to friends if you are happy – Ivy
Se made our own potato heads to show different feeling we might have.
This week, we had Laura from the Waste and Recycling Centre come into school to talk to us about the importance of recycling and to help us understand what can and can’t be recycled. We then used recycled materials to create our own Christmas baubles♻️
We were so proud of our baubles – we can’t wait to display them on our Christmas trees!!
This week we have been reading to story of Stickman, a creature who ends up getting lost when he goes for a run. He longs to be home with his stick lady love and their stick children three but unfortunately he gets lost and used as many different items.
We discussed the different ways stickman is used during the story and how he might be feeling when this happens.
I’m not a Pooh stick! – Henry
I am not a bat! – Lucas
I am not a boomerang – Eden
Stickman is mad because everyone is using him wrong! – Aria
Stickman is sad he lost his family – Gray
We then created our own stickmen, they all look brilliant!

Following on from last week’s arctic habitat designs, this week we used our designs to create our arctic animals habitat.
This week in PSHE, we have been thinking about how we are different to our friends. We talked about what it means to be different and how amazing it is that we are all different to each other and how it makes us unique. We then discussed ways we can be different and worked with a partner to think of ways we are different to each other
