Love Monster

This week in Class 5, we have been reading Love Monster by Rachel Bright which fits in lovely with our theme of Valentines Day 💜. We were working towards a character description so we did lots of work on adjectives. Here we are sorting adjectives to describe the monster into appearance and personality.

So much sewing!

This week in DT, some children made a start on our project, sewing. We talked about how in The Stone Age, people didn’t have access to clothes as easily as we do today. They had to make them themselves using animal skin and needles were made out of bone. 

We didn’t quite have animal skin or bone but we replicated this best we could. We noticed the foam we were using as skin was very tricky to get the needle through and had to be super careful

Shape Stars!

In P.E, we’ve started our new block of learning this half term – ‘Gymnastics’. The class learnt to perform a range of different shapes – such as the pike, straddle, straight, star and tuck. Take a look at some of our shapes below. We tried our best to ensure our bodies were in the right position – from our head to our toes! Then we moved onto two new rolls – the log roll & the egg roll!

We have been fantastic at using our interactive whiteboard to solve questions, and worked so well at our tables in pairs using our concrete resources. We have also been using stem sentences to help us articulate our Maths understanding – and we have been superstars! Take a look at some of our learning below.

The Colour Monster

This week in our mixed Year 1 & 2 class, we read our new book called ‘The Colour Monster’! It’s a beautiful story about a monster who feels very mixed up and confused – his feelings are all stirred together! A lovely girl helps him to put each feeling in a jar, so he can identify his emotions . We’ve been doing some gorgeous work – labelling emotions, describing Anger and thinking of ways to help him!

✅ Give him a hug

✅ Ask him to count to 10

✅ Take deep breaths with him

✅ Ask him to pretend his fingers are candles on a cake and slowly blow them out!

Super Recounts!

This week, Year 1 and Year 2 wrote fantastic recounts about their trip to Gibside/South Shields. They used photographs to support their writing in chronological order and tried very hard to use time connectives to help with their sequencing. I am so proud of their beautiful presentation, they all worked extremely hard!

Monkton’s Got Talent

Class 5 put on an incredible last assembly on Wednesday – showcasing all of their talents and unique qualities in our ‘Monkton’s Got Talent’ show! We had everything from hula hooping and gymnastics, to comedians, singers and football players. I’m so proud of Class 5’s developing confidence and eagerness to perform in front of an audience. What a fantastic afternoon for our Year 1 sports day!

We are so proud of the children for the hard work and resilience they demonstrated throughout every single race! It was so lovely to hear them cheering each other on!

And a huge thank you to all the grown ups for coming along to watch and cheer on the children and of course, getting involved in our adults race!!

Sharing’s Caring!

This week, Class 5 have been learning to make equal groups. They know that the word ‘equal’ means the same and when we are sharing, we know it must be fair! First, the class practised making equal groups through the technique of grouping. After this, we moved onto sharing. Finally, we introduced the ‘divide’ symbol and solved division calculations by drawing our own sharing circles and dots. I am so proud of their understanding!
