This week, Class 5 wrote letters to Santa Claus! They got a special stamp so they knew it would definitely reach the North Pole once photocopied and posted! We told Santa all about ourselves before telling him if we’d be good and what we’d like for Christmas. Take a look at our lovely letters below!

This week in Maths, we’ve been finding one more and one less of numbers within 20. We’ve also been comparing them using comparative vocabulary ‘greater than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equal to’. We’ve been learning to identify the greatest and smallest group as well as moving on to ordering 3 different groups from smallest to greatest/greatest to smallest. We’ve shown a fantastic understanding of our numbers within 20!
On Friday afternoon, Year 1 took part in the KS1 Tennis Festival at Temple Park. We took part in lots of activities to practise our skills and had to work together as a team. We had so much fun!
Our new topic in History is ‘Old and New Toys’. As part of this, we made our own Paper Dolls in DT. We read the story of Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson and got some excellent ideas. We had to be very careful when cutting out our paper doll template – we demonstrated fantastic cutting skills. Take a look at some of our dolls below!
During Extended Writing this week, we wrote Bonfire Night poems based on the 5 senses. We have been trying our best to spell suffix words containing ‘ing’ correctly and some of us did this in our work! Take a look at some of our poems below.
The Year 1 children in Class 5 had a brilliant time at The Word on Wednesday. In the morning, we made moving Lego models by following a set of instructions. We needed to be really careful when following the instructions to ensure we not only found the correct pieces, but that they went in the correct place! We worked really hard in pairs on the iPads to copy each step on the iPad. In the afternoon, we went on ‘Scratch’ and learnt how to make a character move by a simple algorithm. Take a look at our fun below!
The Year 2 children in Class 5 had a fantastic time at The Word on Wednesday! In the morning, we used a green screen and iPads to record ourselves saying facts about our continents that we had been learning in Geography. Once we had all videos, we dropped them into iMovie and started editing our video. We learnt how to create a backdrop using different images, how to edit text and how to add music.
In the afternoon, we used the Stickbot app to make an animation with Lego. We had such a wonderful day and our behaviour was excellent!

This week in History, we started learning about schools in the past. We learnt…
⭐️ Teachers wrote on chalkboards, these were often very big and were at the front of the class.
⭐️ Children wrote on dark slate with a white, squeaky slate pencil. They spat on the slate to rub out mistakes!
⭐️ Older children had dip pens.
⭐️ Classrooms were very big with no carpet and just a coal fire at the front – this meant children at the back got very cold!
⭐️ Children sat in rows at wooden desks, sometimes 5 children had to sit on a bench made for 2!
⭐️ There were no colourful displays.
⭐️ Teachers were very strict – children were hit with the cane if they misbehaved and ruler if they were late!
⭐️ Teachers made children wear a hat with a ‘D’ on it if they didn’t know something – which stood for ‘dunce’. This meant stupid person!
We felt so grateful that schools changed and are now so very different in the present. Take a look at some of our work below.
This week, Class 5 have been learning to compare quantities of objects with the inequality signs. We then moved onto comparing two numbers! We used the following signs and vocabulary…
⭐️ > greater than
⭐️ < less than
⭐️ = equal to
Take a look at our hard work below!
This week, we’ve been reading the story of Farmer Duck. We learnt about punctuation and added full stops, question marks and exclamation marks to the correct sentences from the story. At the end of the week, we retold the story using a 3 box plan. We used our pictures to help us tell the story in chronological order. We did a fantastic job and tried really hard to remember our punctuation.
