This week in History, we started learning about schools in the past. We learnt…
⭐️ Teachers wrote on chalkboards, these were often very big and were at the front of the class.
⭐️ Children wrote on dark slate with a white, squeaky slate pencil. They spat on the slate to rub out mistakes!
⭐️ Older children had dip pens.
⭐️ Classrooms were very big with no carpet and just a coal fire at the front – this meant children at the back got very cold!
⭐️ Children sat in rows at wooden desks, sometimes 5 children had to sit on a bench made for 2!
⭐️ There were no colourful displays.
⭐️ Teachers were very strict – children were hit with the cane if they misbehaved and ruler if they were late!
⭐️ Teachers made children wear a hat with a ‘D’ on it if they didn’t know something – which stood for ‘dunce’. This meant stupid person!
We felt so grateful that schools changed and are now so very different in the present. Take a look at some of our work below.
