This week, Class 5 have read the book ‘Handa’s Surprise’. We found it so funny when the animals pinched the fruit in poor Handa’s basket – and she didn’t realise! On Friday, we wrote fantastic character descriptions about Handa, take a look at some of them below.
This week, we learnt our number bonds to 20! First we consolidated our number bonds to 10 before moving onto 20. We worked systematically both times using the tens frames. We spotted patterns within our calculations when comparing number bonds to 10 with number bonds to 20 and made links. Then we discovered how knowing and using number bonds to 10 can help us with quicker addition!

On Wednesday, a lovely lady from the local tip in South Shields visited us to talk about recycling! We now know how important it is to recycle different materials and to place them in the right bin. At the end, we got to make our own Christmas craft made from cardboard (a recyclable material) and string! ☺️
This week, Class 5 wrote letters to Santa Claus! They got a special stamp so they knew it would definitely reach the North Pole once photocopied and posted! We told Santa all about ourselves before telling him if we’d be good and what we’d like for Christmas. Take a look at our lovely letters below!
This week in Maths, we’ve been finding one more and one less of numbers within 20. We’ve also been comparing them using comparative vocabulary ‘greater than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equal to’. We’ve been learning to identify the greatest and smallest group as well as moving on to ordering 3 different groups from smallest to greatest/greatest to smallest. We’ve shown a fantastic understanding of our numbers within 20!
On Friday afternoon, Year 1 took part in the KS1 Tennis Festival at Temple Park. We took part in lots of activities to practise our skills and had to work together as a team. We had so much fun!
Our new topic in History is ‘Old and New Toys’. As part of this, we made our own Paper Dolls in DT. We read the story of Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson and got some excellent ideas. We had to be very careful when cutting out our paper doll template – we demonstrated fantastic cutting skills. Take a look at some of our dolls below!
During Extended Writing this week, we wrote Bonfire Night poems based on the 5 senses. We have been trying our best to spell suffix words containing ‘ing’ correctly and some of us did this in our work! Take a look at some of our poems below.
The Year 1 children in Class 5 had a brilliant time at The Word on Wednesday. In the morning, we made moving Lego models by following a set of instructions. We needed to be really careful when following the instructions to ensure we not only found the correct pieces, but that they went in the correct place! We worked really hard in pairs on the iPads to copy each step on the iPad. In the afternoon, we went on ‘Scratch’ and learnt how to make a character move by a simple algorithm.
